Core Curriculum for Associates in Ministry
Associate in Ministry candidates may be able to use Select Learning courses to fulfill their requirements of 20 credit hours of foundational course work in theology. These courses are produced under the direction of the Congregational and Synodical Mission unit of the ELCA and may fulfill the requirements for certification. Talk with your synod Candidacy Committee before you register for online courses or establish a local study group using the Select Learning material. The following courses have been approved for use by Associate in Ministry candidates: • Introduction to the Old Testament (3 credits) • Introduction to the New Testament (3 credits) • Systematic Theology: Fundamentals of Christian Theology (3 credits) • Getting Down to Basics: Augsburg Confession and Small Catechism (3 credits) • Lutheran Heritage (3 credits) • From Jesus to Luther (3 credits) • The American Religious Experience (2 credits)) • Foundations of Biblical Preaching (3 credits) |

Select Learning courses are designed for a small group setting. To provide you a class and a facilitator (and the convenience of not having to drive anywhere!), these courses can be taken online with people across the country and a theologian facilitating the class. Our general schedule follows.
Winter (February - May): Systematic Theology: Fundamentals of Christian Theology (3 credits) Introduction to the Old Testament (3 credits) Lutheran Heritage (3 credits) Foundations of Biblical Preaching (3 credits)
Fall (September - December): Getting Down to Basics: Augsburg Confession and Small Catechism (3 credits) Introduction to the New Testament (3 credits) The American Religious Experience (2 credits) From Jesus to Luther (3 credits)

*Final papers are required for Select Learning to issue a certificate of completion for courses. If the course is taken in a local small group the final paper reading will need to be purchased from Select Learning. The final paper reading is included in the cost of the online courses. See details below.
Final Paper Students should keep in mind as they prepare and respond to discussion questions that these are stepping stones for a final paper. Students who are Associate in Ministry candidates or taking the course for any other certification will need to write a 10-page reflection paper.

Participants who use Select Learning courses to meet ELCA Candidacy requirements for academic preparation or for other certification processes, must write a paper for each course. This paper should be a reflection on the participant’s understanding and integration of the course material including the lectures, reading and discussion. The participant should use the following questions to guide preparation of the paper:
